Moving on to GEOMETRY!!!!!!!

1st stop - triangles

A couple of things to remember   -   difference between similar and congruent
Similar - same shape different size
Congruent - same shape same size - (exactly the same)

Triangle rule - all 3 angles of a triangle will ALWAYS add up to 180 degrees.

Using your knowledge of triangles and proportions do the worksheet I gave out in class and also the practice problems from khanacademy

practice with similar triangles

Have a great weekend!

Yep - more proportions
Please completed these 5 questions and bring all your answers to class on Thursday.

1.  If 6 feet of wire cost $3.40, how much do 9 feet of wire cost?

2.  The scale on a map says that 2 inches = 150 miles.  If two cities are actually 325 miles apart, how many inches apart will they be on the map?

3.  How many hours will a plane take to go 1200 miles if it travels 450 miles in 2 hours?

4.  To make a certain color of paint, the ratio of green paint to white paint is 5:2.  How many gallons of green paint are required to mix with 14 gallons of white paint?

5.  One seat was empty for every 4 that were occupied at an open meeting in the town hal about a proposal to build a new firehouse. The meeting room in the town hall can seat 140 people. How many seats were empty at the meeting?

We are also going to be transistioning into geometry so along with the proportions questions please do the following

Define

Similar
&
Congruent

Watch    basics of similar triangles

See you in class!

The Proportion work continues!

Remember that you can watch a video as many times as you need to  -  also taking notes or explaining the concept to someone could help you to remember what you have been working on.

When you are linked to khanacademy be sure that you are logged in so that I can "see" how you are doing.

Proportion game - simple proportions - see how fast you can solve them!

more proportion practice   -  leave your answers as an improper fraction

On a piece of paper answer the following word problems - bring your answers to class on Tuesday

1. A car averages 12 gallons of gasoline for each 420 miles driven. How much gasoline will it need for

a 3,360-mile trip?

2. A $9 sales tax is charged for a $200 purchase. At this rate, what is the sales tax for a $300 purchase?

3. A life insurance policy costs $6.88 for every $1,000 of insurance. At this rate, what is the cost for

$17,500 worth of life insurance?

4.  If 21 sandwiches are needed at an outing for 14 people, how many sandwiches would be needed for 30 people?

5. If a pole 18 feet high casts a shadow 20 feet long, how long a shadow would a pole 27 feet high cast?

Ratios and Proportions

I hope that your getting a little bit more comfortable with ratios
This next link is not khanacademy  - It links you to a ratio / proportion tutorial.  Please follow the tutorial through the part where you define the words - the tutorial will continue after that and you are welcome to continue but I am not requiring it.  You can use a caluculator on the practice part if you need it.

We are going to be working on ratios and proportions

Please view the following vidoes (you can watch these as many times as you like)
And also do the practice problems - (If you get stuck on something write it down and bring it to class with you on Tuesday)
You need to have these done for class on Tuesday

Introduction to ratios

Ratios as Simple Fractions

Practice with ratios

Understanding Proportions

Practice writing proportions

I am so excited to have you be a part of the Burley ABE math class

We are trying a new experiment this year and it is called a "flipped" classroom. I am going to be posting links to videos and practice problems here on this blog - your job is to watch the videos and do the practice problems so that you are prepared for the next class. In class we are going to be working with the concepts that you have both watched and practiced. The idea is that you do the inital learing at home and when you come to class I help you truly understand the topic and know how to apply it. This will also allow us to cover more material in our block - which means that we are trying to help you achieve your goals more quickly. It is very important that you do the "homework" before class - otherise you will be lost when we are working in class.

Hours spent at home working from these links will be a part of the 60 hours you are working toward.

Please don't hesitate to email or call the office if you have any questions.
