Ok lets all take a nice deep breath and close your eyes with this image in your head.

Sometimes when things are hard we let them get the best of us and we start to get super frustrated and then it gets even harder.  When this happens we need to find a way to let go of the frustration and find our focus.  Breathing - nice big deep breaths - and "happy place" can help.  If you are finding Algebra to be your source of frustration - think "In" and "Out" nice and slow with a mental picture of something a little less stressful.  Now think - where am I getting lost and lets go back to that and try again.  Go back to any of the previous posts and work from there.
The following links should also help - check them out and then do the questions at the end.  Enjoy a fabulous weekend!

math playground - do the algebra problems

5 equations to practice

aaamath.com - do the practice questions at the bottom

Word problems

1.  Five times a number decreased by two equals eighteen.

2.  When twice a number is increased by one, the result is thirteen

3.  Ten more than six times a number equals thirty-four.

4.  Sam and Joe are house painters.  Sam makes $5 an hour less than Joe.  On a job that took them both 40 hours to complete, they made $1400.  How much does Sam make in one hour?

5.  Kate makes $320 more each month than her husband Tim.  Together they make $2840 each month.  How much does Kate make in a month?

Welcome Detectives! -
Animated image of a detective with a magnifying glass
Algebra word problems are a lot like working on solving a mystery.  Look at the clues given to you and arrange them in a way that helps you solve the problem.  Look for key words like sum or split.  Set up a framwork for your problem - how can you use the clues to set up your equation.  We worked a bit on this in class today and did a  couple of problems together.  Instead of link this post I am going to pose a few questions to you - work on these and bring your work to class on Thursday - If you have not finished the coolmath link for last week get that done too.

Now for the mysteries - I mean questions :)

1.  Half a number decreased by five is six.

2.  Three times a number plus four equals nineteen.

3.  One less than tree times a number is five.

4.  Three less than a number divided by eight is six.

5.  Seven less than twice a number equals the same number increased by three.

6.  Juan and his boss Felipe are house painters .  For every dollar that Juan gets, Felipe gets $3.   They made $3600 for painting a house.  How much did Felipe make on the job?

7.  Paul, Jeff, and Jerry worked together repairing Paul's car.  Jeff worked twice as many hours as Jerry, ad Paul worked six hours more than Jeff.  Altogether, they worked 51 hours.  How many hours did Paul work?

Again bring all your work with you to class on Thursday so we can work together to see how we did in figuring these out!

A fun filled weekend of Snow and Algebra :)  No seriously, hopefully the snow isn't that bad this weekend and you find a little bit of time to work on some Algebra so you feel prepared for class on Tuesday.  Only 4 more classes left before the end of the block and the post test!!!!!  Time Flies when you are having fun - doesn't it!  So with that said we are going to really work hard for the next two weeks to get through as much stuff as we can - because I want you to feel great about taking the post test.  You should be excitied to show off what all your hard work has done for your skills.

Now on to the fun stuff

I am linking you to coolmath.com - an awsome site for a lot of other stuff too - check it out if you need help with fractions or integers or lots of other stuff.
When you go to this link you will see 6 lessons - the first two are review of what we have already done - if you feel very comfortable with setting up an equation or solving with addition and subtraction you can skip these but be sure to do lessons 3-6 including the "crunch some" parts.  These will really help for class next week.

Algebra

I realized today that some of us are struggling with those crazy postitive and negative numbers in Algebra - aka integers.  If that is you follow this next link to coolmath.  You will find 10 lessons on integers - Take notes and if you want more integer practice just ask and I will be happy to provide actual paper worksheets to work on if you would like them

Integers

Now for some linear equations :)  Instead of a video I am linking you to a written explanation - read it carefully and look at the examples.  You can try the practice at the bottom or link to the little equation game.

We will be working more with equations on Thursday!

- Remember to review all your Geometry stuff for class on Tuesday.
As we are wrapping up our Geometry unit it is time to start looking ahead to Algebra!!!
I know that the thoughts of doing Algebra just sent a shiver up your spine :)  Actually many of us are a little nervous about Algebra but take a deep breath because we are going to get through this together - Actually when we are done you are going to be great at Algebra -
Alright enough pep talk - Let's get busy!

Triangles

First up - knowing the different types of triangles -
We will be using aaamath.com for this post - follow the links to practice identifying the types of triangles by both sides and angles - Read the top box with the definitions and then do the practice at the bottom - you should do at least 10 questions with an 80% accuracy

Triangles by Sides

Triangles by angles

Ok so now that we are familiar with how to identify what kind of triangle we are looking at how do you find a missing angle - Remember a triangle will always equal ??????

find the missing angle

Again- do at least 10 questions with an 80% accuracy or better!

There is open lab tomorrow if you find that you need help or are in need of some hours!

Thursday, February 7, 2013

We are half way through the block!  Time flies when we are learning!!!!!!
How are you doing on your hours???? - Remember you need 60 by March12 -
Open Lab is on Mondays and Wednesdays 10-2
If you are in need of help or more time this is a great option - Just sayin!

Weekend work with the Pythagorean Theorem

If you want to watch Sal solve a word problem using the pythagorean theorem watch the following link - word prob video

Now for the practice part

Do at least 15 problems - you can do more if you want :)  - also notice that on the right side of the screen it keeps track of your percentage   practice word problems

Add on to your vocabulary

Acute angle
Obtuse angle
Reflex angle
Supplementary angles
Complementary angles
Adjacent angles
Vertical angles

Some videos to help  you understand the differences between all these angles are linked here
acute, right, obtuse   &   supplement and complement
Notice that as you are linked to these videos in the top right hand corner there is a green practice button.  Clicking on this will give you a "stack" of questions about these angles - If you are new to angles or you feel like this would benefit you - PLEASE do the practice.
Have a great weekend!  Perhaps it will snow!
